Pack Essential: The Pocket Notebook

Res Chaunce kicks off a new series of posts looking at the Configeer’s item of the month.

Configeer Res: I use a notebook on a daily basis as a journal; we all need to note things down from time to time. People use them for all kinds of things such as a plain old diary, to record their dreams and adventures – you get the picture. I’ve used a pocket sized ever since I was a young child, starting off with things I’d learned, things I heard, drawing of random things. Now I use it on a daily basis to record my days and adventures to log where I’ve been and what I’ve done.

I generally look back on them which are great to read. I like to think my daughter will read them when she’s older and see how much of a cool adventure guy her daddy is or maybe a 9-5 office guy!

Interesting fact

According to legend the notebook was first invented around 1888 by Thomas Holley, who was 24 years old at the time and was working at a paper mill in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Not only does it serve as a daily life companion, I’ve used it for others thing in the past. It came in handy one cold camping evening; I tour a few pages out to help light the camp fire! I’ve even used it for noting down my details when I witnessed a car accident.

You really don’t know how handy a note book is in your pocket until you have one. It really does catch on my wife/daughter are usually not far from a notebook themselves and I don’t mean me stood next to them!

A notebook can’t really fail on you, like mobile phones notes! I prefer to go for the Field Notes brand but there are so many out there – Word, Noted books, Dapper, Nomad, Moleskine just to name a few. The worst I have had happen is staples failing, but that’s nothing a bit of duck tape can’t repair.
