Pack Config 2017: A new conversation…

Will you join us in building a global resource of carry changing, adventure improving gear?

I’m gonna stir things up a bit with Pack Config. Our steadily growing bank of loadouts are something that I really love. It’s part of our community. But while I’m happy trawling the internet to find links for all the gear we feature in our loadouts, the harsh reality is that each post is time consuming to create (trust me I’ve tried leaving out links but then I get bombarded by emails asking “What’s this item?”“Where can I find that item?”!). This means a slower stream of pack loadout fixes, which sucks for everyone!

The other problem is that we all carry items that are still being put through the ringer to see how they hold up. These items get included in our loadouts, even though we’re yet to decide if they’re reliable enough to make the grade of “Pack Essential”.

I’m passionate about improving our packs for the next adventure.  But the combined experiences of our regular contributors doesn’t cover all the quality items out there. So the idea I’ve had is to pool together all of our hours of testing and experiences, to build a global resource of carry changing, adventure improving gear. Every reader of Pack Config will have something to share, and by doing so, we’ll all be helping each other improve our pack configurations.

Most of the conversations I have with Pack Configer’s include some raving about a piece of stand out gear, and it’s those items that I want to hear about. So here’s the question that will be the cornerstone of this new discussion…

What are you confident recommending because its taken a beating and is still going strong?

It’s a fact that most of us (myself included) can’t be adventuring every day. There are livings to be made and things to be done. But putting something through a daily grind is a good way to test out it’s durability, and so everyday-carry-to-the-office items are as much candidates as the compass you take with you into the wild.

To make it as simple and smooth as possible, I’ve created a standalone page to for the sharing of your recommendations.

So what are you waiting for? Join in our conversation now…

While I was researching packs for a 100km endurance hiking challenge, my interest in how we organise our gear gave birth to Pack Config, a place that inspires its readers to improve their own packs. What I carry, either daily or out on a hike, is constantly being refined as I discover new methods and products. More…
