Loadout: Fire Vault
I’m sharing a few possible combinations for the Thyrm Cell Vaults. Here’s my usual fire kit that I usually keep in an old altoids tin…
- Self seal bag with Tinder-Quik Fire Tabs and cotton wool
- Self seal bag with Maya Fire Dust
- Lighter (usually the last resort as I prefer the hands on approach!)
- Triple Aught Design Brass Survival Spark (no longer available but ITS Tactical has one)
- Spitfire Bottle Lid homemade (by the gorgeous Mrs Pack Config) candle, lasts 15 – 20 mins
- Old beat up plain Firesteel with paracord lanyard
- Thyrm Cell Vault XL Rescue Orange

While I was researching packs for a 100km endurance hiking challenge, my interest in how we organise our gear gave birth to Pack Config, a place that inspires its readers to improve their own packs. What I carry, either daily or out on a hike, is constantly being refined as I discover new methods and products. More…
Cool setup! Can you share more about the emergency candle?
Benn, you’re not the first to ask. I think I’ll be preparing a post on it specifically! To answer your question though, it’s essentially a bottle lid with a wick laid in it, and then wax melted into it until it fills up. The wax is allowed to dry and there you have it. Very small emergency candle. It’s not got all the bells and whistles that some have, but it’s cheap and easy to create!
