Contributor EDC: David Massey

David shares the contents of his pockets. It’s full of reliable gear, plus I love his black with hints of orange and camo colour scheme.

My pocket carry is always evolving, but this has been my steady line up for a while now. A pocket dump says a lot about us as individuals, because as, Pack Config’s Editor-In-Chief said once, “no one out there has the same combo you do. It is personal to you…You get to find out a little about someone through it.”

CF and SD Cards – As a photographer, I always have some cards floating around in my pocket. Nothing’s worse than showing up to a photo shoot with fully charged batteries and no cards.

16GB USB Drive – I’m always transferring data from one place to another so this thing is tiny enough to always carry with no problems. Although it’s so small, that I’ve considered tying some para cord to it just to make it harder to lose.

ZT 0801S110VBLK – Zero Tolerance Todd Rexford Design Folder. Just like most of us, my knife carry changes with the wind, but I have several ZT’s because they are dependable and very moderately priced. With the custom maker series, you get that custom design for production price…can’t beat it. I just added this black beauty to my lineup and I couldn’t be more pleased with it.

Car Keys – I have my keyless entry fob for my car with a Fenix E05 attached. It’s a super small AAA powered light, with great output that I have used in so many situations.

Bellroy Elements Travel Wallet – I just recently upgraded to this wallet after carrying a Spec OPS T.H.E. Wallet for years. Some how my wallet grows into a giant pocket tumor, collecting receipts and cards and more junk than I need, paying homage to George Costanza (Seinfeld Reference). So I opted for a new slimmer profile zippered wallet. It’s designed to be large enough to fit an iPhone and a Passport and is a bit oversized but I can spread my credit cards and other items out reducing bulk. I’m also fighting the urge not to let this one get Constanza’d. Only time will tell, but so far I can sit on it without realigning my spine.

Triple Aught Design Skeleton Key Tool and TAD RUT – I don’t always carry these but on extended trips and more involved days, I will carry these just because.

Triple 7 Gear Core Nano Adventure Wallet – I recently added this little pocket organizer to the mix. Again, I don’t carry it on my person every single day, but It’s always in my pack and the Skeleton Key and the RUT fit inside it along with other items perfectly. It’s a great little organizer.

Field Notes – As a Photojournalist, I’m always writing down names, places or ideas, so having a notebook to hold these things is crucial. Sure I could just type a note on my phone, but there is something quintessential about having that with me.

Triple Aught Design Fisher Space Pen 400 Edition – This pen is awesome. Very tiny and very useful. The Field Notes are useless without it.

I wear a Marathon Watch GSAR model with NATO STRAP CO Black Ops band. It’s an awesome time piece. It’s military spec, so it’s most likely bomb proof.

I carry an iPhone 6 with an Anker case. I’ve carried an iPhone since day one and that hasn’t changed but the case, however I change often. I’m always looking for a better case and so far, I have yet to find it.

The best camera is the one you have with you. I always have my iPhone with me so I tend to get some pretty good photos with that. For work pictures other than my family or my dog, I use a Canon 5D Mark 3 with an assortment of lenses. I protect the lenses with LensCoat neoprene covers – It’s like a protective coat for your $3,000 lens.

Stock camera straps always seem to be inferior. I have tried many a camera strap, almost as many iPhone cases an I’ve found the Echo Niner brand to be superior in comfort design and build. The tactical camera strap might be overdoing it a little bit but it looks tough and it is tough. It’s got padding and it stays on my shoulder without sliding off.
