Recon: Legacy Three Day Pack

This is the larger 3-day pack by Grey Ghost Gear called the Legacy in Kryptek Highlander 500D Cordura.

I was a bit skeptical of this new camo type at first but within a day or so of using it outside I could see that this alternative cover was no joke. I had it out in several different environments and it blended well in all and it grew on me. It’s sort of a sandy brown with some green accents. It’s remarkable how the reptile-esque patterns of Kryptek really do blend into surroundings. According to www.kryptek.com, they use a pattern that offers a 3-D look to it, utilizing “background transitional shading” with “sharp geometrical foregrounds” on top that create the look. I guess mother nature knows what she’s doing.

The Legacy is a no frills pack that does exactly what it says. It’s got enough room for three days and nothing else to weigh you down. It was originally designed for the needs of Special Forces operators so you can bet it will suit you.

The four compression straps, two on each side, are good for cinching down the pack when not fully loaded. The matching Kryptek molle webbing throughout the front and sides of the pack allow for the usual customization. It also blends in with the rest of the Cordura making it functional, but not overly tactical. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still very tactical, it’s just nice that it’s not that noticeable.

It’s heavily padded shoulder straps are very accommodating when it comes to heavy loads. The pack itself is surprisingly light but don’t overpack because “ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain.” The shoulder straps are adjustable with tri-glides.They also use D-rings on both shoulder straps for running a hydration tube or attaching things. Waist straps are included along with the sternum strap. All plastic hardware is Duraflex and tough as nails.

I found the oversized grab handle at the top to be just the right size. On either side of the grab handle are the outlets for hydration tube or radio antennae covered in webbing with hook and loop closure to protect against rain.

This pack shares a label with Tactical Tailor so you know it’s built to last. It has a standard three compartment design. A smaller slash pocket, a larger admin type pocket and the main space using Hi-Visibility orange so sorting through your kit is easier. I never understood why pack makers don’t use this hi-vis option more frequently. We all spend way too much time rummaging through our packs looking for that one thing.

The bottom of the pack has some generous two inch webbing across the bottom as attachment points allowing for more pouches or a place to attach some rope. There are also drainage grommets at the bottom if you happen to get wet.

In summary, this pack is just the right amount of features for the price. The Grey Ghost website has them listed for $94.47. Stay up-to-date with GGG here.
